Emergency Alert System 'At Risk Of Overuse' After Nationwide BBQ Warning, Local Councils Queue Up For Access

Every mobile phone in the country sounded the national emergency alarm on Friday, vibrating in unison across shopping centres, trains and at least one funeral, to warn the public against the use of disposable barbecues. The system, designed for situations involving imminent danger to life, has not previously been used to discourage a particular type of grill.

Margaret Fenn, parish councillor, said she had submitted a formal request for access to the same system to warn residents that bin collection was moving to Thursdays. “I’m not asking for anything the government hasn’t already done,” she said. “We’ve tried the newsletter. We’ve tried the noticeboard. People only really listen when their phone makes that noise.”

A council leader in the Midlands, who asked not to be named “for now,” confirmed he had made a similar request regarding a pothole on Station Road, describing the national barbecue alert as proof that “reach is clearly available, it’s just being rationed.” He said a klaxon felt proportionate given residents had “already ignored two cones and a laminated sign.”

A government spokesperson said the alert system remained reserved “for matters of significant public safety,” and confirmed the barbecue warning had met that threshold “following careful review.” The heatwave that same week, blamed for several hundred deaths, apparently had not.

Gavin Bacon, a spokesman for Reform UK said they found support for the system was high among it’s members “not least because it might protect the local swans”, adding “it’s finally a reason for charities to make sure illegal immigrants have a mobile phone”, before conceding he did not have a number for how many swans were unaccounted for, but felt the trend was ‘clearly there.’”
