Bluefin Tuna Returns To North Sea For First Time In 90 Years, Is Immediately Caught

A bluefin tuna was confirmed in the North Sea this week for the first time since the 1930s, ending an absence widely attributed to decades of industrial over-fishing. The historic reappearance was marked, fittingly, by someone catching it.

“It’s a fantastic moment for British fishing,” said the skipper responsible, speaking from the deck on which the fish was subsequently weighed, photographed and sold, “we’ve been waiting ninety years for this species to return, I can’t believe we were the ones to land it”. Asked whether it might have been wiser to let the species re-establish itself before resuming over-fishing, he said only: “They’re all going to get eaten eventually. No sense wasting time letting them enjoy the area.”

A representative from the The Marine Stewardship Council said the organisation had “mixed feelings” about the catch, noting it may have been beneficial to allow stocks to recover further so that “ordinary Britons can enjoy a blue fin tuna steak rather than just the lucky purchasers of this solitary fish.”

The government’s own fishery spokesperson confirmed the tuna was immediately purchased by DEFRA for scientific research but refused to comment on “idle speculation” when asked about the menu at next weeks “summer party”, usually attended by both government ministers and representatives from various marine charities - including the MSC.

The Marine Management Organisation confirmed it was “reviewing options” for a dedicated bluefin tuna quota, now that the species had re-established a presence in UK waters, a presence which, as of Friday morning, stood at one but by the afternoon had collapsed to zero.
