Corporation guidelines require presenters to deliver record-breaking temperatures with the same tone used for drizzle.

BBC weather presenter Freya Coulson was formally spoken to by an editor after her voice “audibly wavered” while reading out a temperature of 43.2°C on Tuesday’s forecast, the hottest ever recorded in the UK. The single complaint that triggered the review came from a retired amateur weather-watcher in Surrey, who described her tone as “borderline alarmist” and “not what I tune in for.”

“I have read out rain predictions for eleven years without incident,” Coulson said. “That number was real. I checked it twice before going on air, out of professional disbelief more than anything. If anything, the look on my face was an accurate reflection of the data.” She said she had not intended to editorialise, and pointed out that nobody had raised concerns the previous week when she’d sounded equally alarmed about a “danger to life” amber warning, which she noted was also, technically, a fact.

A BBC spokesperson said the corporation’s impartiality guidelines require weather to be “presented without inflection that could be read as taking a position on the temperature,” and confirmed Coulson had been offered a place on the same “neutral delivery” course previously completed by a sports presenter reprimanded for “sounding pleased” about an England goal.

GB News’s Dermot Hale devoted eleven minutes to Coulson’s “meltdown,” calling it “proof the BBC has abandoned all pretence of neutrality,” in a broadcast that also featured a studio thermometer graphic captioned “IS IT REALLY THAT HOT?” and three guests who agreed it probably wasn’t.

Margaret Fenn, a local parish councillor, said she had “nothing against a hot day” but felt one Tuesday did not, in her view, constitute a pattern, adding that she remembered the summer of 1976 perfectly well and “nobody needed a course to get through that one.”

The retired complainant confirmed she remained a keen viewer of the forecast and had written in twice before, both times to praise a different presenter’s handling of snow.
