Migrants Rescued Mid-Channel Reportedly Complain About Legroom, - EU Considers Legislation

Increasing numbers of migrants crossing the Channel are making complaints about overcrowding and reduced legroom according to representatives from Dover-based refugee charities. Due to the much-reduced number of successful crossings more people are being squeezed into each boat, this has also resulted in complaints about hand luggage storage. “I don’t understand how I’m supposed to start my new life with only the possessions I can store under my seat”, complained one refugee as he made his way up the beach. Another spoke of unfair seating arrangements that had led to his wife being seated next to him rather than behind as his religion would normally demand.

Human rights lawyers had considered appealing to the European Court on Human Rights but it’s now understood that the EU is considering extending existing legislation to channel crossings.

Asked to comment, an EU representative said “We already set clear guidance on passengers rights including hand baggage allowances and their right to choose seats and there’s no reason why enforcement action couldn’t be taken against these illegal traffickers”

Gavin Bacon, a spokesman for Reform UK said this was another example of European overreach querying “When will this madness end? Next up they will be demanding compensation for delayed or cancelled crossings!” – when pressed Jerome Thomson, a human rights lawyer raised a single eyebrow and commented, “Interesting….”.

Our Calais based reporter spoke with disgruntled traffickers about the ever-increasing demands from people waiting to cross and learned that one proposal being discussed was to offer paid upgrades similar to those offered by budget airlines. This would allow access to both early boarding and an airport style lounge in Café Noisette only 50m from two of the most common departure points. Restrictions about bringing your own food on-board would remain however, “we aren’t idiots”, commented one trafficker, “the last thing we want is to be covered in croissants and other French fancies during the crossing!”

It would seem even people smugglers have standards these days.
